A newsmaking Friday in New York: President Ballard talks Scouts and world peace

Rabbi Soloveichik gave a tour of Shearith Israel to M. Russell Ballard, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Latter-day Saints, and they discussed a wide range of topics, from the history of Shearith Israel to the importance of American religious freedom.

In 1776, several British soldiers desecrated two of Shearith Israel’s Torah scrolls.

Chatham Square Cemetery

The oldest of our extant cemeteries is known as the Chatham Square Cemetery.  It is located in Chinatown at 55 St. James Place.  The land was originally purchased in 1682 by Joseph Bueno de Mesquita.
