Book Launch Event: The Weight of Ink

Featuring Author, Rachel Kadish

The Weight of Ink is as historical novel set in the Portuguese-Jewish communities of 17th century Amsterdam and London. The process of researching and writing the book took author, Rachel Kadish, deep into vibrant areas of Jewish history. Join us as she launches her new book and describes how she spent years researching everything from Spinoza to types of iron gall ink to the education of women in the Sephardic Jewish communities of the time, all in the service of telling the story of a Portuguese-Jewish woman with an unconventional mind.


Rachel Kadish is the award-winning author of the novels From a Sealed Room and Tolstoy Lied: A Love Story, and the novella I was Here.  Her work has appeared on NPR and in the New York Times online, Ploughshares, and Tin House.


Chatham Square Cemetery

The oldest of our extant cemeteries is known as the Chatham Square Cemetery.  It is located in Chinatown at 55 St. James Place.  The land was originally purchased in 1682 by Joseph Bueno de Mesquita. 


Synagogue tradition associates this Hanukkah lamp with the First Mill Street Synagogue of 1730.
